<video:title><![CDATA[Dan Harmon Story Circle: 8 Proven Steps to Better Stories]]></video:title>
<video:description><![CDATA[Have you ever felt like you’re stuck in a creative loop? You start a script, get halfway done, but because you can’t figure out the ending, you abandon it, then start a new one. And then it happens again. And again. ►► http://bit.ly/2H4HiFY

So writer/producer Dan Harmon tackled this problem.

He took centuries of storytelling principles and turned them into an easy-to-use guide for building a compelling story.

One circle. Eight steps.

Understanding good narrative structure won’t just make you a better writer.

It’ll make you a better storyteller.

Today, we’re going to look at Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Dark Knight’, a film with a seemingly complex plot, that we can break down into the 8 steps of the story circle.

The theory boils down to three sentences:

(1) A character is comfortable (2) but they see something they want, (3) So they head out into uncharted territory to get it (4) but have to change in order to succeed. (5) When they finally grasp it, (6) they pay a hefty price (7) and return to their original situation (8) having changed inside (and sometimes outside).

Keep watching and see how this applies to Batman!

<video:title><![CDATA[The Biggest Difference Between Eastern and Western Animation]]></video:title>
<video:description><![CDATA[Are you a massive fan of animation, like me? Whether it's Anime, or Western animation, I love this medium. But one day, I got to thinking... What is the biggest difference between the two (East vs. West)? After some careful consideration, I believe I have finally discerned the difference. Aside from stylistically, the biggest difference is how they convey emotion. Western animation tends to use character as the driving emotional force, while Anime uses the circumstances that the characters find themselves in as the main emotional generator. I explain what I mean in the video, and I examine two scenes to help illustrate my point. One scene is from "A Silent Voice", and the other is from, "The Hunchback of Notre Dame". I hope you enjoyed this type of content. I am going to start doing more of these video essay type videos about storytelling, so I hope you look forward to them!

<video:description><![CDATA[Every Pixar movie has introduced its own technical problems, from creating the first fully computer-animated feature film with "Toy Story" to developing a stronger virtual camera for "WALL-E."

In this episode of "Movies Insider," we take a look at how the unique worlds, characters, and practical challenges brought up by each Pixar movie pushed the studio to expand animation technology.

We break down the progress the studio has made over the years in different areas of computer technology, including shading, ray tracing, subdivision surfaces, subsurface scattering, translucency effects, cloth and fur simulation, and muscle movement on human characters. Here's how Pixar improved CG animation with every one of its films from 1995's "Toy Story" to 2011's "Cars 2."

Episode #22
Anyone who knows how to read, can record themselves reading lines and call it a voice-over.

But odds are, when you’re submitting auditions or getting paid to record voice-over, the client is looking for you to do more than just read words from a script.

How can you go from just reading lines to bringing a script to life? And how do you do it on your own?

<video:description><![CDATA[Many people have heard about World Heritage. But what is it exactly? And what's the idea behind it?

It is commonly known that UNESCO is the UN organisation responsible for World Heritage. But how exactly does it work? Which sites are recognised as World Heritage, and when and how? And what does it have to do with the Nile? Over a thousand exceptional monuments and sites of outstanding, universal value around the globe are now listed on the World Heritage List, from the Great Wall of China to ancient Inca ruins and the Great Barrier Reef. With a playful pen stroke, this short animated film provides an overview of the history, idea, background and guidelines of the World Heritage Convention.

What makes these disparate worlds come alive are clear, consistent rules for how people, societies -- and even the laws of physics -- function in these fictional universes. Then you can cut on the action the player is taking and seamlessly transition in the action of the cutscene/cinematic. This lets you tailor your level design and game design and development to allow for these seamless transitions in and out of the story of your game.

Last 2020, Ben invited me to this collaboration between 60 animators. The title that I chose was Self Love. In this video, I'll break down the process, and we'll go into detail about conceptualizing, designing, animating, and compositing. This is a frame by frame animation project but this isn't a step by step tutorial. This video would dive more into the thinking part behind the animation.

<video:title><![CDATA[The History of Anime & Japan]]></video:title>
<video:description><![CDATA[Anime or Japanese Animation (アニメ) is perhaps one of the most influential forms of media in the modern world. It has a history spaning over a century and is intrinsically linked to the development of Japan. From the end of the Tokugawa era, through their rapid modernization and beyond WW2. While the medium is extremely popular internationally, there is shockingly little work covering the early development of Japanese animation. Before modern hits, before Osamu Tezuka's Astro Boy, this is the history of Anime.

The anime included in this video range from 1907 Katsudou Shashin, 1918's urashima taro, Mabo's Big Race, Norakuro, Kintaro and Momotaros Sea Eagles and Divine Sea Warriors. As well as talks about famous anime directors such as Mitsuyo Seo, animator Junichi Kouchi and the renowned Noburō Ōfuji. Tracing Japnese animation devlopment from its roots in woodblock prints (ukiyo-e) from artists such as katsushika hokusai all the way to black and white Japnese paper cut animation and cell and colour animation. Japanese cartoons have an evolution history of more than century.

<video:description><![CDATA[Storyboarding is the planning of shots for a film, TV show, or anything else that is similar. This is done for both live action and animation, and helps people in later stages of production know where characters go, what should happen, and where the camera should be positioned or moved for each shot. If you’re ever planning an animation or video project of your own, you can make storyboards for yourself. Planning in this way makes a big difference in the final results of a project, so here’s everything you should know to get started!

<video:description><![CDATA[Non-photorealistic rendering has opened up an alternative to the ubiquitous “Pixar look.”

Subscribe and turn on notifications 🔔 so you don't miss any videos: http://goo.gl/0bsAjO

When you think of CGI animated films, you likely think of Pixar. The studio practically invented the genre with 1995’s Toy Story — the first CGI animated feature film.

After Toy Story, almost all animation studios wanted to follow in Pixar’s successful footsteps, straight down to their style. Many studios sought out “The Pixar Look”: extremely high quality, physically based, and in some cases almost photorealistic.

It’s an appealing approach that remains popular at the box office — but animated movies started looking kind of homogeneous. And while studios and independent artists tested out more stylized approaches in short films, no studio would commit to a feature-length animated movie that looked so different.

That is, until Sony Pictures/Imageworks took on Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Instead of chasing the look everyone was after, the team wanted to create something visually new. They did it with “non-photorealistic rendering.”

And since Spider-Verse, non-photorealism has taken off, with almost every studio set to incorporate it in the next five years. Check out our video to learn more about how non-photorealism works.
